When does life start?

After watching St. Elmo's Fire, a crappy 80's movie in which post grads are forced to grow up and accept life, it made me think of a few things. My dad is asking me when I'm going to buy a house. Quite honestly, I have no idea. When am I supposed to be ready to do these things? I'm no where near saving 10% of any house even if the market is trash. I'm turning 30 this year, and I really don't have any plans or desire to get married or have kids right now. I'm more focused on whether or not I'm going to buy these shoes.

I'm not totally irresponsible, I'm still working on paying off debt I accrued from being super underpaid living in NYC, and the costs incurred when I moved. I'm saving, and paying off debt, but is there a time I'm supposed to feel ready? How do you know when you are?

Don't let ANYONE pressure you to buy a house. I think we succombed to peer pressure, more than anything, or rather just our society's mandate that we were at a point in life that that's what we should be doing. We didn't get a bad loan or anything, but it did bring us considerable stress for awhile. My advice (if your looking for any) is to focus on paying off debt, then save for a house. You're pretty good at living frugally, and it sounds like you're getting better, so hold off on those awesome shoes and go to Ross or Off-Broadway instead.

That's good advice. I have been trying to cut down my serious shopping habit which is what is really draining my account. I needed new jeans and instead of buying those $120 ones, I bought $20 ones at Old Navy and a navy blue ruffle top. I look bootilicious too.
